Bittersweet

Mixed emotions on the last day of our glorified summer vacation. Sad that not every day can be completely different from the last… an adventure waiting to be had, but excited to get back to normalcy with a routine, a house, a bed, a shower, a wardrobe, home-cooked meals (!!!), and two cats. You know, all that non-homelessness business. Reality awaits… sigh.

And a sincere thanks is due to all who have supported us so we could take this time to be selfish. Jon and Kelly especially, for keeping alive my two high-maintenance feline jerks, Sara and Val for harboring all my crap, all those who have had open doors for us along the way, everyone who has not genuinely thought we were crazy, and dear CRV for being a trooper and not breaking down. We couldn’t have done it without your help. And to the few of you that are even reading this, a humble thanks for taking the time for my ramblings. Hopefully, what felt a little self-indulgent actually accomplished its goal of keeping us more connected.

Some more of awesome Maine. It’s adorable little Cadillac Mountain made us chuckle after the switchbacks and hairpins we encountered earlier in this trip. The sweet little beach where we really witnessed a seagull swoop down and steal a granola bar out of a lady’s hand - which was the best thing ever. My first lobster since I was 16! (and even then, it was just the tail)… and it’s amusing to me how they serve it on styrofoam. Really liking it here. Now if only we can squeeze in a whale watch…

We began today in Portland, Maine on our way to our campsite outside Acadia National Park. Becky’s Diner is a great little spot on the bay with delicious, cheap breakfast served all day long with the Atlantic staples served for lunch. They start serving at 4am to accommodate the early workforce of fisherman. Supah friendly. We need to get some work done so we head over to the bay and sit near the boat dock to get some files out. I really… really could get used to this work environment. After our leisurely breakfast/work session in Portland we head towards Acadia. It’s about a 3 1/2 hour drive. Again, no luck with a campsite in the park, but there’s a KOA close by with available sites. We arrive, set up shop, and head into Bar Harbor (about 8 miles away) for dinner. What a lovely little town! Beautiful sailboats, ships, and fishing boats. And seafood restaurants by the dozen. We had a pretty delicious meal of mussels and clams at West Street Cafe. And, of course, chowdah. Really, really feeling the Maine vibe. And the accent. It is wicked beautiful here.

Great time in Boston with friends. And had the most delicious meal at my favorite restaurant in the North End, Antico Forno. Best gnocchi ever! Such a great city.

Random stop in Louisville last night. Found a super good deal on the Galt Hotel downtown on priceline that wasn’t much more than the campsite we were thinking of stopping at. We had a delicious bbq meal at Doc Crows that may have been one of the best we’ve had on the trip so far. And Houblon Chouffe no less! We stop at Side Bar for a nightcap and to try a bourbon we can’t get in NY. The bartender recommends Wellers Reserve 90. Not too bad.

It’s a quick stop in Louisville, but well worth it.

Update: You can totally get Wellers Reserve 90 in NY. Do I feel happy or angry about this? Not sure.
